December 1, 2001

I can hardly believe this year is practically over. I know I say that every year, but this year has gone faster than ever. I wonder how many more years we’ll have. We live like time on this earth will go on forever, but our days are indeed numbered.

Mom seems to be doing better overall. I am not sure if the increase in Seroquel is responsible or if she has just come out of her slump. Whatever the reason, all pleasantness is welcome here! *smile* She did give them a hard time during respite today, but hey, no one’s perfect. She let me wash her hair tonight and that’s enough for me! She was also very lovey dovey all evening and we had a very affection parting at bedtime. Hopefully tomorrow will bring more of the same.

Our weather has been soooo wonderful. I’m sure it was in the 70’s today. That made for a favorable drive to Staunton to meet Karen for our private Christmas party. We reserved a room at the library and worked on our scrapbooks, exchanged Christmas gifts, and went to lunch at Red Lobster (thanks Jim!). We had a good time, as usual. Karen has really been cracking me up lately. She was talking about something the other day and I reminded her, “Things could be worse.” She quickly replied, “Oh, I know! I’m waiting!” in a tone that let me know she was expecting the bomb to fall at any moment. Anyway, Karen gave me a Winnie the Pooh cookie jar full of delicious homemade cookies!

Two years ago Karen told me she was making me a quilt for my birthday. She told me all about it, got the measurements and the fabric and all. My birthday came and went... no quilt. As Christmas approached she told me,
“Your quilt will be ready for Christmas!”
Christmas came and went.... ixnay on the quilt.
“I’m giving you the quilt for Valentine’s Day!”
“Uh huh”
Your quilt will be a wonderful Mother’s Day gift, Angela!”
Still no quilt. Another birthday rolls around.
“I’ll have your quilt ready for your birthday!”
You guessed it... no quilt. By this point I was happy knowing I would have a quilt to celebrate my AARP eligibility, but Karen shocked me and showed up with the quilt and two pillowcases today. It’s lavender and white and so delicate and beautiful. I absolutely love it! And it’s real.... the phantom quilt lives!

I made it back into town just in time to pick up Mom. She was napping and didn’t want to get up, but once I got her home the rest of the night was great. A suitable ending to a wonderful day. Good weather, good friends, good traveling, good food, good pictures, good memories.... good grief, I’m done.
