Pastor Parker used to tell us that if you wanted to know what was inside of a person, watch to see what comes out when he is ‘bumped’. ”Changing Lanes” reminded me of that as I watched two men respond to extremely unpleasant circumstances. Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson did a superb job in what turned out to be an excellent movie.

After a fender bender on the interstate, Gavin (Ben) leaves Doyle (Samuel) stranded, which results in quite a calamity for Doyle. Gavin had accidentally dropped a vitally important file at the scene of the accident. Doyle snatched it up and thus begins a game of getting each other back. Gavin had the power to make earth shattering problems for Doyle, but Doyle’s power came in the file he possessed.

Each man discovered some things about himself that he didn’t like. I really enjoyed that aspect of the movie since we live in a world where all problems are caused by ‘someone else’ and most people see themselves as just fine-it’s everyone else who is messed up. I appreciate someone taking a look inward and realizing how corrupt they really are and taking steps to make dramatic changes.

I believe the title “Changing Lanes” was referring to more than the accident, but also the two men changing lanes in life. Starting down a new road. It serves to renew our hope in humanity and dream of happy endings.

As I reread my little review, I can’t help but be reminded that there is only one way to escape our depraved natures. While taking steps to do right is commendable, only Jesus can truly change a man. Also, our hope is in the Lord, not in humanity. Strange how much I continue to think like the world. Even so, the truth always seems to glare out at me through the fog.

Matthew 3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
