Yesterday America was attacked by terrorists who had hijacked domestic commercial flights. Two planes flew into the twin World Trade Center towers in Manhattan. One plane crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. The fourth plane crashed into the countryside in Pennsylvania. We believe they were unsuccessful in reaching their target because of heroic efforts of those on board. I am stunned and horrified as I realize we are just beginning to become aware of the many repercussions of this unthinkable blow. Predictions suggest deaths are over 20,000 people in the Manhattan area. I believe the Pentagon is still burning and the loss there is estimated below 200. Many of the dead are rescue workers. I believe over 300 NYC firemen are missing and many police officers, too. My prayers are with the families and loved ones, the injured, and those determined to continue the rescue while there is still hope.

My thoughts turn to Josh and Leah, who are both in the USAF. They may be off to war soon. While I believe retaliation needs to be harsh and swift, when your own children are involved, it gives one pause. I spoke to Josh and he seemed very calm and ready to do whatever he must for his country. My prayers are with them and all the military even now deployed and those who stand ready.

As I watch the news coverage with Mom she occasionally asks what happened. I answer simply, but truthfully. She is totally unconcerned, unable to grasp the reality of what has transpired. I observe the devastation as it unfolds, even as I glance at Mom and sense the devastation taking place in her own body.

I took her to the doctor today because I have been having a hard time persuading her to get out of bed. I wanted him to look at her eye and to refer me to a podiatrist, too. She was very uncooperative and I had to block her into the examination room. The nurse gave up trying to get a blood pressure. Mom finally quit trying to get out the door and sat down to wait for the doctor. He wrote her a prescription for some antibiotic eyedrops and said they would give me the referral. She seemed happy enough tonight when we ended the evening with a little snugglefest.

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
